Encore! City at The Foothills Tour - Mitchell
July 20, 2013
Depart: 12:30 p.m.
Join us for an afternoon of touring the “City at the Foothills” in Wessington Springs, SD. We will begin by touring the Opera House which was built by William Brinner in 1905. Throughout the life of this building it has been used for theatre production, rollerskating, motion pictures, and also became the city’s fire hall. From 1960-1994 the building sat vacant, then in 1994 the Dunham Historical Society purchased the building and began the restoration to what it is today. In 2002, an addition was completed on the south side of the building in memory of Kyle Evans, SD Centennial Troubadour. Next we will stop to tour the Shakespeare Gardens and Anne Hathaway Cottage, originally built by Professor Clark and Emma Shay after their retirement in 1932. This thatched roof cottage was built from a picture postcard of the original at Stratford-on-Avon in England. After our tour we will enjoy tea in the cottage with the local hostesses!
